How To Choose A Down Jacket?

1.The principle of heat preservation of down jacket

The thermal insulation principle of down is to make a thermal insulation layer between the human body and the air, and the material of the thermal insulation layer is air. Down jackets reduce the circulation of cold air around the body by storing air, thereby achieving the effect of heat preservation. In short, the more air in a down jacket, the better its insulation.

2. The key to choosing a down jacket is to look at these 5 points

To determine the quality of a down jacket, it mainly depends on its 5 points: down quality, down content, down filling, bulkiness and fabric. Among them, the product of the two factors of down filling and bulkiness determines the thermal insulation performance of the same size down jacket. The larger the down jacket size, the more down content is required to achieve the same insulation effect.

1)Down quality

Refers to the quality of down jacket filling. The fillings of down jackets are mostly duck down and goose down. These two down materials are subdivided into four types: white goose down, gray goose down, white duck down and gray duck down.

Goose down is more expensive than duck down. Goose down has larger fluff, higher fluffiness and less odor.

White velvet is more expensive than gray velvet. White down can be used in a wider range of scenarios than gray down, and has nothing to do with thermal performance.

The quality of various velvet is sorted as follows:

Goose Down > Duck Down

White goose down > Gray goose down > White duck down > Gray duck down

2)Cashmere content

The filling of down jackets is not only down, but also feathers. The down content refers to the proportion of “down” in a down jacket. The down is in the abdomen of the duck/goose, and it is in the shape of a down flower without a feather stalk.

The higher the down content, the better the thermal insulation effect, and the less likely it is to drill down.

Once the down content is less, the corresponding feathers will be more, because the feather stalk is harder, so it is easier to drill down.

The international cashmere content standard is as follows:

【70% – up to standard】【80% – cold resistance】【90% – optimal】

It should be noted that 100% cashmere content does not exist, and the highest content according to the standard is 95%; in addition, the cashmere content is a relative value, and the warmth retention depends on the absolute value of the down filling content of the down jacket.

3)Filling volume

The amount of down filling refers to the weight of all the down filled in a down jacket. It is a key indicator to measure whether the down jacket is warm. The larger the amount of down filling, the warmer it is.

For down jackets with the same down content, the more down they fill, the warmer they will be.

For down jackets with the same amount of down filling, the higher the down content, the warmer it will be.

There are regulations for the down content of down jackets, but not for the down filling, because different styles of clothes have different down fillings.

According to stricter standards, to achieve the thermal effect:

Short down jacket: 130g or more down filling

Northern Down Jacket: down filling more than 200g

Outdoor down jacket: down filling is 250g – 450g

However, the “bigger” in the sentence “the greater the weight of the down filling, the warmer it is” also has a certain degree. Too much down filling will reduce the bulkiness of the down, which is not conducive to the down absorption and storage of human body heat. Next, let’s talk about bulkiness.

4)Fluffiness

Loftiness is the main symbol of down grade classification, which refers to the value of cubic inches of volume per ounce (30g) of down under certain conditions. For example, one ounce of down takes up 800 cubic inches of space, so we say the down jacket has 800 fill.

The greater the loft, the more still air it contains. The still air layer is a very good thermal insulation layer, so the bulkiness of down is directly related to the warmth retention of down jackets.

All other things being equal, a down jacket made with high-loft down is lighter and more compressible than an equally warm down jacket made with low-loft down. For down jackets with the same weight, the larger the volume, the better the bulkiness and the stronger the warmth retention.

For a down jacket, down filling and bulkiness are equally important. A ribs down jacket with 900 fill but only 100 down is probably not as warm as a medium thickness bread down jacket with only 500 fill but filled with 250g down.

Therefore, a down jacket with a large amount of down filling + high bulkiness will have a good warmth retention effect.

5)The fabric of the down jacket

The warmth retention performance of down will drop a lot after being soaked in water, so it is preferred to choose fabrics with waterproof treatment. The greater the number of roots in the down jacket fabric (the fabric has fine and tight pinholes), the more it can prevent drilling and running down.

3. Tips for buying down jackets

In a word: Look at it, touch it, touch it, press it, touch it, shoot it, and hear it.

1) Look: Check whether the information of the trademark is complete, the amount of cashmere, the amount of cashmere filling and the type of wool. You can ask the shopping guide for the bulkiness information.

2)Touch: Touch the down through the inner layer. If there are more stalks (a little prickly), it means that the feather content is high, and if there is no obvious feeling of prickling, it means that the down content is high.

3) Press: For down jackets with the same amount of down filling, the larger the volume, the higher the bulkiness and the better the quality. Press it when buying, the faster the rebound, the higher the bulkiness of the down jacket.

4) Pat: clap hard to see if there is dust or fluff floating, so as to judge the quality. The dust may be because the merchants mixed the crushed hair and dust hair into the down by shoddy. Shooting fluff indicates that the pinholes in the fabric are too large, and the down jacket will become thinner and thinner.

5)Smell: Poultry down and feathers will have a smell, and if the treatment process is not up to standard, there will be a peculiar smell.
